It's common to see a 40% spread between electricians quoting the same house. Some of that is genuine — different assumptions about the panel, or whether trenching is included. Some of it isn't.
The way to tell the difference is to ask for an itemised quote. A single number tells you nothing about what's been assumed. A breakdown shows you whether two quotes are even describing the same job.

The thing most people get backwards
Most people spend two weeks comparing charger brands and about ten seconds thinking about amperage. That's the wrong way round.
The brand barely moves your bill. Most Level 2 units do the same job, and the differences are mostly app features, cable length and looks. Pick whichever you like.
The amperage decides everything expensive. It sets the wire gauge, the breaker size, and sometimes whether your panel can take the circuit at all. A 40-amp charger needs 6 AWG conductors. A 48-amp charger needs 4 AWG — thicker, dearer, and harder to pull through a long run.
So the order that saves money is: work out what you actually need, pick the amperage, then choose whatever charger you like at that rating.
A 32-amp charger adds roughly 25 miles of range per hour. Overnight, that's about 250 miles. Unless you're driving well over 200 miles a day, a 32 or 40-amp unit covers you comfortably — and it's cheaper to install than 48 amps.
The 48-amp option makes sense for high daily mileage, two EVs sharing one charger, or a vehicle with a very large battery you regularly run down. Otherwise you're paying for thicker wire to solve a problem you don't have.
And don't oversize the wire "just in case." It's a real cost difference for capacity you may never use.
DC fast charging isn't a residential option — the supply requirements put it firmly in commercial territory. If you run a business in Monroe and want customer charging, that's a different conversation and one we're happy to have.
The big question
This is the single biggest variable in the price, and the honest answer is: sometimes, but less often than you'd think. A lot of Monroe homes built before 2000 have 100-amp or 125-amp service, and a 50-amp charger circuit can push that over. There's more than one way to solve it.

Two ways to connect
Both are perfectly good. The choice is mostly about flexibility versus a slightly cleaner, slightly more capable installation.
A NEMA 14-50 outlet is the plug-in route. We install a 240-volt receptacle and your charger plugs into it. It's usually cheaper, it's easy to take with you if you move, and if you're unsure what you want later it keeps your options open.
A hardwired charger is connected directly to the circuit with no plug. It's required if you want to run above 40 amps, it's tidier on the wall, and it's generally the better choice outdoors since there's no receptacle to weatherproof.
If you're genuinely undecided, the outlet is the lower-risk starting point — it can be converted to hardwired later if you change your mind.
Whichever you choose, the circuit is dedicated — no sharing with the dryer, no splitting off an existing 240V run. That's NEC Article 625 and the inspector will check it.

Trickier installs
Not every charger goes on a wall three feet from the panel. Around Monroe and out toward Good Hope and Lake Oconee, detached garages and long driveways are common — and they change the job.
If the garage already has a subpanel with capacity, this can be straightforward. If it doesn't, you're looking at a new feeder from the house, which usually means trenching. That's the item most likely to move the price, and it's the reason we won't quote a detached garage over the phone.
Outdoor installations need weather-rated equipment and proper sealing at every penetration. It's not difficult, but it uses different materials and it adds to the cost — commonly a few hundred dollars over an equivalent indoor install.
For outdoor positions we usually recommend hardwiring rather than an outlet. One less thing to weatherproof, and one less thing to fail in five years.
If you're running two EVs, you have options beyond a second full installation — some chargers support load sharing across two units on one circuit, and scheduling handles the rest. Worth raising at the site visit rather than discovering later.
None of this is essential before calling — but a five-minute look now means the quote we give you on the phone is much closer to the final number.
Permits
Yes. A new 240-volt dedicated circuit requires an electrical permit in virtually every jurisdiction, and Walton County is no exception. The permit triggers an inspection.
That inspection specifically verifies three things: the wire gauge matches the breaker, the breaker is correctly sized for the charger's continuous load, and GFCI protection is present where code requires it. Those are exactly the corners a cheap unpermitted install cuts.
An unpermitted EV circuit causes two specific problems later. It can complicate a homeowners insurance claim if there's ever an electrical fire in the garage. And it turns up during a sale, when the buyer's inspector notices a 240-volt circuit with no permit history attached to it.
We pull the permit in our name, schedule the inspection and meet the inspector. You don't arrange anything or take time off for it.
The federal charger credit has expired. The Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit — the 30% credit worth up to $1,000 on home charger installations — does not apply to equipment placed in service after 30 June 2026.
We're mentioning this because a lot of pages still tell you to claim it. Some of them were published this year. If you've been budgeting on the basis of getting that money back, the figure has changed.

Quotes on this job vary by 40% or more for the same house, usually because they're not describing the same scope. These six questions make two quotes comparable.
If they can't answer this, they haven't done a load calculation — and the quote is a guess.
And if they say yes, ask whether a load management device would work instead. There's a big price difference.
Distance drives material cost. A quote given without measuring it can only move upward.
A quote that excludes it isn't comparable to one that includes it. Get both on the same basis.
40 amps and 48 amps need different conductors. A cheaper quote may simply be wiring for less.
Pulling a permit and meeting the inspector are two different commitments. Confirm both.
