The Artland of Georgia

Permits
There's a good reason people get this wrong, and it's a genuinely interesting piece of local history.
Watkinsville first appears in Clarke County records in 1791, and from 1802 it was the county seat of Clarke County. It held that role for seventy years — until 1872, when Athens, by then much the larger town, took it over.
Locals were unimpressed. They voted to split, and in 1875 Oconee County was created out of the south-western part of Clarke, with Watkinsville as its seat once again.
Athens is eight miles up the road, and the two jurisdictions work quite differently. Athens-Clarke County is a consolidated unified government with its own portal, its own fee formula and a rule requiring each trade to pull its own permit. Oconee County is a separate county building department with its own process.
Filing in the wrong one doesn't just delay a job — it means starting the application again. We file with Oconee, pull the permit in our name, schedule the inspection and meet the inspector.
The South Main Street Historic District is on the National Register, taking in Ashford Memorial Methodist Church, the Haygood House and Ashford Manor. Eagle Tavern at 26 N Main Street dates to around 1801 — possibly as early as 1794 — and has been on the Register since 1970.
Properties of that age carry the usual issues behind the plaster: ungrounded two-wire circuits, panels long out of slots, and wiring that has been extended several times without ever being reconsidered as a whole. An inspection first is usually cheaper than guessing.
