Inside the city limits, your power doesn't come from Georgia Power or Walton EMC. It comes from the City of Monroe. The Monroe Utilities Department is a full municipal provider - electric, natural gas, water and wastewater - run out of City Hall at 215 N. Broad Street, a few streets from our own office.
The City has been doing this a long time. The first electrical grid went in during the 1920s, and natural gas followed in the 1950s. That history is written into the housing stock: a lot of Monroe homes were wired in eras whose standards look very different from today's.
We'll work out which applies to your address before quoting, because it affects the timeline. If you're not sure yourself, look at who sends the bill.
It matters because service upgrades, meter work and new connections are scheduled with whoever owns the meter and their lead times differ.

Older Monroe homes
Monroe carries nineteen of Walton County's twenty-seven National Register sites, including nine historic districts. For an electrician that isn't trivia, it's a map of where the old wiring is.
The Monroe and Walton Mills Historic District covers around 120 acres and 236 contributing buildings. The Monroe Cotton Mill went up from 1895 with brick walls sixteen inches thick; the Walton Cotton Mill followed in 1900–01. Around them sit the mill houses - small, densely built, and wired long after they were constructed.
These are the properties where we most often find knob-and-tube, two-wire ungrounded circuits, and three-prong outlets with no ground behind them. They're also where insurers ask the most questions.
The North Broad Street district runs to 55 acres and 56 contributing buildings. The commercial district around the 1883 courthouse, Second Empire, by Bruce & Morgan takes in 33 more.
Work in these buildings has an extra constraint: what you're allowed to disturb. A rewire in a contributing building isn't just an electrical question, and we'd rather raise that at the walkthrough than halfway through.
