The most important thing on this page

Hang a fan from an ordinary light box and it will hold. For a while. Then the constant vibration works the fixings loose over months or years, and one day the fan comes down — usually over a bed or a sofa, because that's where fans go.
It's a genuine safety hazard and it's a code violation. It's also extremely common, because it's exactly what happens when someone swaps a fan in where a light used to be without changing the box behind it.
You mostly can't, from below. The box is hidden behind the canopy. If your ceiling currently has a fan that was professionally installed, the box is probably fine. If it has a light and you want a fan there, assume the box needs changing and budget for it.
We check before mounting anything. If the box isn't rated, we fit one that is — and if that means opening a small section of ceiling to reach the joist, we'll tell you before we start rather than after.
A little wobble is often just unbalanced blades and takes minutes to sort. Movement at the mount itself is a different matter — switch it off at the breaker and call rather than living with it.

New wiring, no existing box, a light fixture being converted, a vaulted ceiling, a DC-motor fan, an outdoor location, or a new circuit. Each of these has a specific way of going wrong that costs more than the install would have.
Three things account for most of it: mounting to a box that isn't fan-rated, wiring a DC fan through an old dimmer, and using an indoor-rated fan on a covered porch. None are obvious, and all three cost money later.
Sizing
Blade span is measured tip to tip. Too small and the room never feels moved; too large and it dominates the space and can feel draughty.
In a long room, two smaller fans usually move air better than one very large one — and they look more deliberate.
Blades want to sit roughly eight to nine feet off the floor, with a minimum of seven feet of clearance beneath them. The downrod is what gets you there.
Rule of thumb: out of slots means a panel change out. Out of capacity means a service upgrade.
The expensive mistake
This is the thing almost nobody knows, and it destroys expensive fans across Monroe regularly.
A standard AC dimmer will burn out a DC-motor fan. DC fans — the quieter, more efficient, more expensive kind — have electronics that cannot handle the chopped waveform a dimmer produces. They need their own matched wall controller, usually supplied with the fan or available from the manufacturer.
